Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST)
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST): A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) stands as a beacon of higher education in Bangladesh. As the country’s first specialised public university dedicated to science and technology, SUST has carved a niche for itself through academic rigor, research excellence, and technological pioneering. Nestled in the scenic landscape of Sylhet, the university is a hub for talented minds from across the nation and beyond.
History and Foundation
The journey of SUST began in 1986, when the Government of Bangladesh recognised the need for a specialised institution to foster science and technology education. Consequently, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Act was passed in 1987. The university was named in honour of Hazrat Shahjalal (R), the great Sufi saint of Sylhet.
The university officially commenced its academic journey on February 13, 1991. With a modest beginning comprising only three departments—Physics, Chemistry, and Economics—13 faculty members, and 205 students, SUST has since grown into a premier centre of learning.
Pioneering Achievements
SUST is celebrated for introducing several “firsts” in the Bangladeshi higher education landscape:
